A documentary filmmaker, and the wife of California’s governor, nearly screamed through tears from the witness stand as she told a court Harvey Weinstein raped her in a hotel room.

Jennifer Siebel Newsom said she was 31 when she was attacked by the disgraced movie mogul during what she thought was a business meeting to try to build her career as a producer and actor.

But Los Angeles Superior Court heard that when she arrived at a hotel in Beverly Hills, Weinstein had no interest in discussing her projects.

Ms Siebel Newsom cried throughout her two and a half hours on the stand on Monday, beginning with when she was asked to identify 70-year-old Weinstein for the record.

"He’s wearing a suit, and a blue tie, and he’s staring at me," she said as tears began to flow.

Now 48, Ms Siebel Newsom described how Weinstein first approached her to introduce himself at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2005.

At the time, she was a producer and actor with only a few small roles, and he was at the height of his Hollywood power.

He was in the Los Angeles area a few weeks later, stopping by her home during a small party to drop off a gift and inviting her to a meeting at the Peninsula Hotel in Beverly Hills.

Ms Siebel Newsom told the court she found herself unexpectedly alone with Weinstein when she arrived at the suite for the meeting.

She said she assumed others would be present and they would talk about her career.

Asked to describe her feelings after Weinstein allegedly emerged from the bathroom in a robe with nothing underneath and began groping her while he masturbated, she said: "Horror! Horror!

"I’m trembling. I’m like a rock, I’m frigid. This is my worst nightmare. I’m just this blow-up doll!"

Recalling her thoughts when the alleged rape took place she shouted: "He knows this is not normal!

"He knows this is not consent!"

Ms Sibel Newsom also described how she was "scared" and had told Weinstein "this was not why I came here" as she physically tried to back away.

While giving a graphic description of the alleged sexual assault and rape by Weinstein, she said "he was just so big and so determined" and "this was hell".

At one point she shouted "Oh God!" as if overcome by the memory of the alleged attack before bursting into tears.

Weinstein watched from the defence table while Ms Siebel Newsom gave evidence.

His lawyers argue the pair had consensual sex and she was seeking to use the once powerful producer to advance her career.

Ms Siebel Newsom is the fourth woman Weinstein is accused of sexually assaulting who has taken the stand in Los Angeles. Her testimony was the most dramatic and emotional so far in the three-week trial.

Weinstein has pleaded not guilty to 11 charges of rape and sexual assault involving five women and could face up to 140 years in prison if convicted on all of the charges.

The disgraced movie mogul is already serving 23 years in prison in California for rape and sexual assault after being convicted in New York in 2020.

Ms Siebel Newsom had not met her future husband, current California governor Gavin Newsom, at the time of the hotel meeting in 2005.

She said she did not tell him what happened until after allegations against Weinstein became public.

In cross-examination, Weinstein attorney Mark Werksman questioned Ms Siebel Newsom about why her husband had accepted campaign donations from the producer.

She said the governor returned the money after she told him about her encounter.

Ms Siebel Newsom is known as Jane Doe #4 at the trial, and like the others Weinstein is charged with raping or sexually assaulting, her name is not being spoken in court.

But both the prosecution and the defence have identified her as the governor’s wife during the trial, and Ms Siebel Newsom’s attorney has confirmed to news outlets that she is Jane Doe #4.
